The project focuses on two elements that link the existing northern and southern parts of the city together and strengthen the city center as a central generator of urban life and community.
THE LOOP – a refinement and strengthening of the city’s central commercial and cultural axis, which integrates and revitalizes retail in both new and existing neighborhoods. By integrating the existing retail zones, it creates a cohesive shopping experience that ties the city together.
THE CULTURAL CONNECTION – links the city’s existing and new cultural activities and amenities on a journey through the city from the fjord in the south to the harbor in the north. The new areas make it possible to bring together the city’s cultural life close to the city center with excellent accessibility. The city’s new cultural facilities include a cultural center, a maritime museum, a library, a cultural plaza, and a shopping center with a cinema complex, among others.
ENSURING A VIBRANT CITY AND HARBOR
Both the Loop and the Cultural Connection are rooted in the existing city – its history, building structures, landscape, existing cultural facilities and amenities, and citizens’ shopping patterns. The connections overlap and interweave, linking existing qualities with new urban spaces and thereby ensuring a varied and vibrant interaction between the city and the harbor at selected hubs.
Three new urban neighborhoods with mixed housing, business, retail, and cultural functions are connected to these new urban elements.
