The project interprets and recreates parts of the old Ålesund while establishing a new district directly connected to the old one. The project includes a pier for cruise ships, allowing the city to fully utilize its great potential as a tourist destination in the future.
The old Jugend city plan is reinterpreted, and the old coastline is restored from the infill of the abandoned industrial port. This creates new sheltered canals, along with outdoor spaces and buildings in close contact with the water, which is one of the city’s distinctive features.
SHIELDED OUTDOOR SPACES
The new city quarters are established as block developments with turns and twists, designed to capture sunlight and protect outdoor areas from the strong westerly winds.
The project establishes three different building typologies, all of which draw inspiration from the buildings of Norwegian coastal towns: the boathouses, the wharf houses, and the canal houses. The blocks are designed as mixed-use for housing, business, and trade, but also integrate large buildings such as a hotel/conference center and a new cultural center featuring a cinema.
EMBRACING THE QUALITIES OF THE EXISTING CITY
For the project, two pathways have been developed through the city: a commercial loop and a cultural pathway, which connect the city’s scattered activities into coherent routes, so that future commercial and cultural facilities embrace the qualities of the existing city.
