The development plan for Byens Ø in Odense Harbor creates an active cultural and experiential island with housing, business, and leisure close to the water. A pathway connects new and old buildings in a narrative where the past meets the present. The vision unites movement, sustainability, and culture in a vibrant urban environment.

A UNIFYING PATH CONNECTED TO TRANSFORMATION

The project includes the development plan for a future cultural and experiential area in Odense Harbor. A unifying pathway element connects new buildings and existing industrial buildings that are being transformed into new cultural functions. The area features housing, recreational facilities, cultural buildings, businesses, and a North Atlantic cultural house within an overall active urban district.

The vision is for Byens Ø to serve as the city’s cultural and experiential hub, with the main ingredients being movement, everyday sports, sustainability, housing, business, culture, and water, working together with key players such as DGI and the North Atlantic House, among others.

SPATIAL AND ARCHITECTURAL QUALITIES

In the jury’s statement, the proposal is highlighted for capturing and transforming the area in a way that includes history in the new narrative. Something new is created based on the existing context. The proposal includes significant spatial and architectural qualities, both in relation to urban spaces and the treatment of new and existing building volumes. The added and existing elements complement each other to create new complex wholes that, through the juxtaposition of new and old, open a dialogue between the past, present, and future.
