The proposal for Hyrdehøj Plejeby is based on the inherent qualities of the provincial town: the dense low-rise urban layout, the irregular street patterns, alleys, squares, plazas, and green public spaces. The town serves as inspiration for creating a new physical environment that supports the daily life of older residents, making it familiar and reassuring.
MOVEMENT THROUGH THE COMPLEX
A central communal building is surrounded by four low mini-blocks with inner city gardens, connected by sheltered pathways. These routes lead through both outdoor and indoor spaces, offering varied sensory experiences, encounters, and interactions with people and activities – just as one would experience walking through a city.
DIVERSE BLOCKS, DIVERSE GARDENS
The design and volume of the communal building emphasize its symbolic importance and reference the familiar city, where the natural hierarchy between public and private buildings is easily legible. The blocks vary in size and geometry, adapting to the irregular shape of the site and thereby creating sheltered areas, sunny corners, and views across the blocks. Although the blocks form a cohesive functional structure, each garden has its own distinct character, referencing both the city and the home: the park and the square serve as the city’s communal spaces, located around the communal building, while the herb garden, ornamental garden, orchard, backyard, and courtyard all belong to the residences.
