The new city hall in Bodø is a vision to create a democratic and open building that offers a modern interpretation of Bodø’s scale and post-war architecture.
The proposal is adapted to Bodø on the city’s terms. The new building is designed to expand and complete the block encompassing the city hall building and thus integrate into the block structure of the city hall district. The complex consists of three buildings: an existing bank deemed worthy of preservation, the existing heritage-listed city hall, and a new building.
ADAPTED ROBUSTNESS
The new building fits into the block structure and adapts to the scale, proportions, and architectural character of the city and its streets, including materials and facade rhythm inspired by the old city hall. Parts of the new building’s facade are shaped to respond to the neighboring structures. The old motifs from the city hall are reinterpreted, and the new building appears to grow organically from the block. The entire block will have a robust and grounded presence, like a rock in the city.
OPTIMIZED FOR NATURE
The building is designed with a strong focus on daylight optimization. To achieve this, the facades are based on thorough daylight and wind analyses, with integrated solar shading tailored to the building’s exposure to sunlight and wind at different times of the year.
