Modern city development is still clinging to the conventional thinking of last century. The density and presence is often gone, the fascination, the mystery and the energy. Instead we create cities based on the ideals of suburbia introducing light, air and view for everyone like ourselves. The fascinating spaces of the classic city, its inbetween spaces of semiprivate or semipublic areas and gardens are not present in the planning. They are being removed in order to maintain a functional and spatial division of people and life. The mix between living and working integrated side by side has been replaced by functionally divided city blocks often without any experience of city spaces, scale, complexity and life.
CONCEPT – WorkLiving
BETWEEN URBANITY AND INTIMACY
WorkLiving City Block both integrates the surrounding city and integrates all the basic characteristics of the human scaled city; Housing, work, shops, cafes, studios, workshops, play areas, narrow streets, secret arcades, hidden gardens and open squares. Sunny and shadowed city spaces, open and closed gardens, city plazas up and below etc. All spaces that are connceted within an overall structure, that leaves room for unplanned strolls inside the block.
WorkLiving City block is laid out as a system of units. The units are programmed after several criterias; the rythm of daylight, passing of shadows, connections to the surrounding city streets and plazas, connections to public and private traffic and the opportunities for implementing functional and fascinating private, semi-private and public spaces inside the block. All the functions is being mixed. Living and Work, private and public placed side by side, up and below.
