A new multi-user and multi-purpose cultural community house at Musicon in Roskilde is initiated and sponsored by Roskilde Festival and Roskilde Kommune as a co-build. It will be the future base of three important cultural institutions, Roskilde Festival, dance theatre Aaben Dans and Råstof Roskilde, who provides musicians and bands with rehearsal facilities. Users will be both professionals, volunteers, audience, guests and local community. As a cultural-creative hub it aims to support diversity, active participation and community building among other pur-poses.
In our proposal four building volumes form a complex of separate buildings to permanently host the Roskilde Festi-val Group, Aaben Dans and Råstof Roskilde and for shared use a festival hall as a social space.
These volumes are visually connected under a translucent draped cloth in silver coloured expanded metal. Thereby the architectual expression becomes recognizable and iconic. Under the drape the ground floor is kept open and transparent to make it possible for permanent users to interact and collaborate and to welcome other user groups.
The project embrases the unpredictable, spontanious, creative and innovative in future activities yet unknown and makes the building complex flexible and adjustable to changes in future demands. Its architectural idea is inspired by the history and essence of Roskilde Festival and the unique quality and spirit of Musicon to which Aaben Dans and Råstof Roskilde for years have been key contributors.
