The former power and electricity plant in Rønne, Bornholm, is being converted and refurbished for office and meeting use. The building complex was designed by Anton Rosen in 1910 and later extended in 1925 and 1938. The complex was listed in 2015. The buildings were taken out of operation in the 1960s and have since the late 1990s remained without a specific function and are now subject to a major and comprehensive restoration.

RESTORATION PRINCIPLES

Based on analyses of the building’s history, archival material, heritage values and architecture, a conservation-led restoration approach is recommended, in which traces of use and wear are retained. The original building elements are preserved to the greatest possible extent, while only a limited number of new building elements and installations are added to support the building’s new function. The additions are subordinate to the existing architectural qualities in terms of form, colour scheme and materiality, and form a clear dialogue with Rosen’s architecture.

The overall building complex and its appearance, with its distinctive composition, dormers, chimneys, rooflights, and granite and brick detailing, have high heritage value. The complex is characterised by an unusually high degree of ornamentation for a technical building, in line with Anton Rosen’s architecture and the stylistic tendencies of the period.

REFURBISHMENT OF BUILDING COMPONENTS

Based on the identified heritage values, a careful refurbishment of the complex’s character-defining building elements and surfaces is carried out. The doors of the complex have high heritage value and are restored with respect for their original design and detailing. Most existing windows are reused and refurbished through carpentry and painting works. Existing tiled surfaces are cleaned and restored with the aim of re-establishing a coherent and well-maintained appearance. New installations are carefully integrated with due consideration for existing structures, spatial qualities and heritage surfaces. The colour palette is based on the original colours of the buildings and contributes to the overall impression.
