  • Livsrum Herlev is shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Award 2021 in the category Completed Buildings – Health.

Livsrum Herlev, designed and built for Danish Cancer Society in collaboration with Realdania, offers counselling and various activities for cancer patients, relatives and those left behind. It is one of seven cancer counselling centres in Denmark built to showcase a new form of healthcare architecture.

The building is designed to protect and embrace its users. It is arranged as a small urban structure of gardens and terraces on a domestic scale of two floors. A lush and welcoming interior provides a comforting homelike setting and offers users a tranquil escape. External facades screen from heavy road traffic and captures scenic features of Herlev Hospitals newly developed surrounding landscape. The project is based on sustainable and holistic solutions, integrating social architecture, function, energy and resource optimisation.

We look very much forward to present the project to the international jury and delegates at the festival in Lisbon December 1-3. See all ten finalists and their projects here.

A new multi-user sports facility at the listed school building, Søndermarkskolen, Frederiksberg Kommune, has been selected by Lokale- og Anlægsfonden, DIF og Dansk Skole-Idræt as one of five projects to be carried out. The project transforms a traditional ”gymnastiksal” into a shared social space and everyday lab connecting school, sports clubs and local community. The purpose is to daily facilitate more physical and mental health promoting activities. Through co-creation between key stakeholders, users and the studio novel ideas combining architectural and organisational strategies have merged into an innovative common project to be further developed throughout 2021.

    Roskilde, DK

We are proud to announce, that ELF Development has chosen us as architects for the transformation of the listed and iconic IRMA coffee roasting facility in Rødovre, DK.

The coffee tower was designed by architect Bent Mackeprang and Thorkel Klerk and built in 1968, where until 1986 it was the center for roasting, grinding and packaging Irma’s coffee products. All with one purpose: to create greatness and quality. In the future the building will be transformed into a public community centre with café, exhibition facilities, galleries and workshops.

The transformation focus on preserving the existing qualities with few additions. Our aim is to be almost invisible in our presence of the transformation by

    • preserving the remaining traces of the production facilities
    • preserving the existing palette of colours and materials
    • defining and adapting the new functions to the nature of the building – the existing building defines the new functionality  – not the other way around
    • preserving the language of details in the existing building and keeping a dialogue with these in the new additions
